I Stopped Growing

That has been a problem in many of our lives and in the body. It is like a stormy day in our Christian walk.  We wake up one day with a cold, dreadful, dark and dreary faith. Sure, on the outside it seems cheerful but its true nature is far from a warm spring day.  When we come around we always ask “What happened?” to which there is only one answer. I stopped growing. How? And we may think, “I don’t miss church.” “I read great books by strong religious authors.” “I pray regularly.” “I try not to sin, well not in big ways anyway. I should be fine. How did I get here?"

We will stop growing when we quit. “Wait a minute, I’m no quitter!” I understand sometimes we let other things rule our life instead of God. We simply relinquish things in our faith that should not be given up. That’s what I mean by the statement “we quit.” We quit being strong and courageous (Joshua 1:6-9). We quit seeking God first (Haggai 1:1-10). There are six things that we give up that will surely stop our growth.

 We abandon the truth.

John 8:31-32

We make concessions for deviation from the word.

2. Cor. 11:1-4

We renounce being Holy.

2 Cor. 6:14

We tolerate sin.

James 1:12-15

We become content with being stagnant and lukewarm.

Rev. 3:14-22

We stop spreading the word.

Matt. 13:23

Those six concepts are some of the strongest things that keep us and the body from growing.  We must be aware of these things so that we can continue to grow. We must not nurse on milk forever but move to solid spiritual food (Heb. 5:12-14; 1 Cor. 3:1-3). Spiritual milk is necessary but only for newborn babes (1 Pet. 2:1-3).  We need to be maturing in Christ (Phil.3:12-16). The only way to do this is by studying His word.  We can’t quit. We must be faithful unto death (Rev. 2:10). If we quit we can’t be faithful. We must keep running the race (Heb. 12:1-2). Our reward is eternal salvation. How easy it is to be enticed away from the word with our own evil desires. The cost of leaving is death (Mark 16:15-16). Let’s not stop growing. Let us hold fast to the truth and stand firm in it. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom. Teach and admonish one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs. Sing with grace in your hearts to the Lord (Col. 3:16). Never quit so that you never stop growing.

Have you stopped growing?

The Unselfish Heart and Liberal Hands

“Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common, and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need.” Acts 2:44-45 There was an old woman who lived in a home by herself.   She was able and in her right mind.   She would wake up every morning and pray.   She always prayed for everyone, even her grocery list.   She knew everything she had was a blessing from God.   The kicker here is she lived next to a faithless man. He would wake up every morning and hear this old lady pray. After some time he grew indignant with her mindless praying so he said “I’m going to get her good.”   Knowing she always prayed for her groceries he woke up early one morning and jotted her list down as she prayed. He slipped out the door and bought the best of every item.   He neatly placed them in a basket and set them at her front door. He then rang the door bell and ran. Hiding in the bushes he saw her come out and...

Whispers & Squeaky Wheels

When we make concessions for deviation from the word we began to die spiritually. (2 Cor. 11:1-4)   Anyone who says “I know Him” and does not keep His commandments is a liar and the truth is not in Him (1 John 2:4). We too often lay claim to being God’s while forsaking Him. Hey, that is just easier to do. Like all things we would rather just say we have a connection to something than actually commit. Seriously, what would you do if something went bad? So, let’s just say "Yeah, I know Him." Then we can do what we want. That is how many want to treat Christianity. John was speaking on such atrocities when he stated that if we claim to know Him we must keep His commands or be a liar. Sounds Good To Me     We need to be seeking to be doers of the word not just hearers only. James 1:22  makes it clear when James says for us to be doers of the word not hearers only deceiving ourselves.   The deception comes in the fact we are ...

A Little Bit of Singing & A Whole Lot of Accompaniment.

The subject of instruments and clapping in worship is an interesting one. I know this a controversial topic. I’m well aware that as a “Christian” group we do not all agree on the same opinion in the matter. I would like to bring you today not an opinion but fact on this topic. I pray that with an open heart you will read, search the scriptures for yourself and discover what God commands.  Mosaic Covenant When we examine the Mosaic covenant, we see that the music conducted was both in song and with instruments. Special assignments were given by God. This was done by God through His prophets and overseen by King David ( 1 Chron. 25:1-7; 2 Chron. 29:25-30 ).  We must keep in mind that the singers from the tribe of Levi and instruments of music were not merely authorized but that they were commanded. Even in Nehemiah we see the use of instruments. This was done according to the commandment we see in the ordinance for the restored temple services. Nehemiah says ...
