Prayer

Prayer is a wonderful blessing given to us by God. I once heard it said, “The bible is His words to us and prayers are our words to Him.” Amen. We need to talk to Him and do it regularly. He wanted us to hear Him to the point His words resonated deep within us (Colossians 3:16; Hebrews 4:12).  Then He goes on to say that we are to pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:1). This lets us know that He wants to hear us and our words matter to Him. God makes no mistake in emphasizing the need to pray and the need for us to lay things at His feet.
God wants our prayers. He wants to hear our heart cry out.  The things that are deep within us are His too. We often try to hold those in and hide those things. They are also the same things that rot our inmost being. God wants those thoughts and desires. He does not want well planned and well-orchestrated prayers that are done to be seen by men. Matthew 6:9-13 makes it clear how God wants us to pray. Take some time one day and study what Jesus prescribes for us to pray for and like. Every word carries so much weight. Now He did not mean this example to come a proscribe must prayer. He wanted it to be a starting point for us to understand what God desires to hear from us. We are broken, we are hurting, and we are in need God knows these things. These are the things we are to be giving Him.
When we pray, we need to know He will answer (Mark 11:24). We see here that not only is God going to answer, but when we pray for what is right, we will receive it. That is a very tough thing to accomplish. That is a very tough mindset to have. James helps us in getting into this mindset. God tells us that the prayers of a righteous man “avails” much (James 5:16).  The rest of this verse has something for us to focus on. He says the effective and fervent prayers. We need to be praying for what is written according to the word, and we need to pray fervently.
The widow (Luke 18:1-5). The widow is the one we need to think about. I struggle with this. I have always felt one prayer is enough. Pray it, and the answer is what it is. However, this verse makes it clear that we need to avoid heart.  We need to pray, pray, and pray. We must be fervent, accurate, and persistent. We see here that the persistent prayer can seemingly wear God down. I do not think that is the case. I do think that we need to be in a state of begging when God answers our prayers to understand His answer. I also think that there is some maturity that takes place as well.
Prayer is powerful. Not because we can pray or that our words are magical, but it is powerful because of who answers them. We need to believe in Him, and we need to hold to Him. We need to understand that the groaning of our hearts is what He wants to hear. We to know that He wants us to be blessed and have what is right. So we must not give up on our prayers. We must not stop praying. We must always talk to our King.

The Unselfish Heart and Liberal Hands

“Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common, and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need.” Acts 2:44-45 There was an old woman who lived in a home by herself.   She was able and in her right mind.   She would wake up every morning and pray.   She always prayed for everyone, even her grocery list.   She knew everything she had was a blessing from God.   The kicker here is she lived next to a faithless man. He would wake up every morning and hear this old lady pray. After some time he grew indignant with her mindless praying so he said “I’m going to get her good.”   Knowing she always prayed for her groceries he woke up early one morning and jotted her list down as she prayed. He slipped out the door and bought the best of every item.   He neatly placed them in a basket and set them at her front door. He then rang the door bell and ran. Hiding in the bushes he saw her come out and...

Whispers & Squeaky Wheels

When we make concessions for deviation from the word we began to die spiritually. (2 Cor. 11:1-4)   Anyone who says “I know Him” and does not keep His commandments is a liar and the truth is not in Him (1 John 2:4). We too often lay claim to being God’s while forsaking Him. Hey, that is just easier to do. Like all things we would rather just say we have a connection to something than actually commit. Seriously, what would you do if something went bad? So, let’s just say "Yeah, I know Him." Then we can do what we want. That is how many want to treat Christianity. John was speaking on such atrocities when he stated that if we claim to know Him we must keep His commands or be a liar. Sounds Good To Me     We need to be seeking to be doers of the word not just hearers only. James 1:22  makes it clear when James says for us to be doers of the word not hearers only deceiving ourselves.   The deception comes in the fact we are ...

The Danger of Apathy: Cause for Spiritual Failure

It is easy for us to be stagnate because we live a life surrounded by stimulation and change. We like to see growth in the church and if it takes too long, we move on. It is wearisome to run the race of endurance ( Heb. 12:1-2 ). It is the same work every week and often times we become indifferent in our Christian walk. Apathy is extremely dangerous. When we develop an unenthusiastic mindset toward the Bible, Christianity, and our worship to God we begin to wither away. Is That Me?      The Lord wants our work to be zealous, continuous, and fervent ( Gal. 4:18; Tit. 2:14 ). When we are lukewarm, we know that we must serve God, but we are half-hearted about doing so ( Gal. 5:13; Heb. 12:28 ). Our lack of zeal shows in our apathy toward sin, limited worship attendance, and not bearing much fruit for God ( Rm. 6:1-2; Heb. 10:25; Col. 1:10 ). These are all red flags. Also, being lukewarm can be seen in ...
